Homemakers opt out of Heritage Day table due to Covid concerns
The Midway Homemaker Volunteers and County Council members met Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 9 a.m., at the Fairgrounds building. There were six members and one Agent present.
Leadership training today was on “Principles of Home Food Preservation,” which was presented by Extension Agent Emily Vestal. She provided each member with an eleven-page hand-out that was in coordination with a colorful PowerPoint presentation. It covered the basics of home canning, reminding those who have canned foods, past or present, why it is necessary, how to can low-acid/high-acid foods, use of proper containers and utensils, preparing and processing foods, pressure or boiling water canning, final results, and storage of canned goods. Many helpful hints were submitted and also, a caution in selecting recipes for canning.
Four reliable canning sources for recipes were available for members to browse through:
Mississippi State University-The Complete Guide to Home Canning University of Georgia-So Easy to Preserve
USDA-The Complete Guide to Home Canning
Ball Blue Book-Guide to Preserving; (from Ball Canning Jar Corporation);
More information can be obtained through the University’s educational websites and the Department of Agricultural website.
Midway Club President, Betty Hickey, called the meeting to order and read the Thought-for-the-Month: “You cannot swim for new horizons until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”-by William Faulkner.
The pledge of allegiance to the flag was led by Bonita Wages. The devotion, given by Emily, was entitled, “Avoiding Obstacles to Effective Prayer,” scripture from Psalm 28:1-9; and Linda Hester led the prayer.
Betty read the minutes of the last club meeting; members approved. She gave the Council Treasurer’s report. The Midway Club Treasurer’s report was not available.
Old Business
Members were reminded of the County Council picnic being rescheduled to July 29th of next week, within our local area.
New Business
Members were asked to consider the club’s participation in Heritage Day in Iuka this coming September. The escalation of the Covid-19 virus again in our state has caused some to voice concerns of safety, especially for members with health issues. In this regard, members were inclined to vote against a display table for this year.
The members voted to again purchase/deliver a meal to the Tishomingo Adult Day Service, in September, as a continuation of one of the MHV club community goals. The Day Service would be contacted by the club, as usual, prior to the set date and have an appropriate time scheduled and confirmed by those in charge.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:05 AM.
If you would like to use your free time to help with the club’s community projects, please contact the Extension Office at (662) 423-7016 and become a Homemaker Volunteer.Ebusperi
