Here's Your Rundown for Everything Happening at Iuka Middle

Iuka Middle School has finished the first half of the first nine weeks! The students have been working hard in class, been sorted into their houses, and are joining clubs and athletic events to stay involved. We have a lot going on here at IMS, and we pride ourselves on making sure that each student can find a way to get involved.

IMS Chieftain football has started the season strong under the leadership of their new coach Cliff Johnson. They started the season with a loss to Kossuth, but came back with a big 34-0 victory over Tishomigo. Next, they went on to beat Belgreen 24 to 18 and fell to Adamsville in a hard fought game by one touchdown. Assistant Coach Darrell Cain says he “feels good about where we are right now as a team but the coaches and players both know there is more work to be put in. We have two county rivals left on our schedule with Belmont coming up next Tuesday [the 19th]. It will be a test for us, but the coaches believe in these boys and know they will finish the season strong. Go Chiefs!”  Please come out and watch your football players and cheerleaders as they take on Belmont at home on the 19th. Concessions will be available.

FBLA and Honor Society (formally known as BETA) are getting in the swing of the new school year.  They have both had their inaugural meetings and are looking forward to a productive year. FBLA is putting together one of the largest competition teams that it has ever had, and has made a commitment to be involved in community service by tackling three service projects. BETA is being changed to the IMS Honor Society. Instead of paying dues to the national society, student’s dues will be put directly back into the community through service projects. This month is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so students will assemble care baskets and make cards for St. Jude patients at our first meeting on September 27th (7:30 AM in the cafeteria).

Our House System is off and running with all students and staff sorted into their houses. We would like to say a special thank you to all of the people and businesses that sponsored a house. Please listen for your shout out on our live broadcasts during the upcoming home basketball games. Our House Point Leaders for each house this week are as follows: Credo-Cadance Curry, Integrita-Justin Guo, Makerimi-Dixie Robinson and Eden Johnson, Meraki- Ashlyn Butler, Mkali- Landan Tyler, and Cooper Clark, Synergi- Angel Salic, Teenima- Madilyn Price, and Uongozi- Riley Pruitt. We are proud of these students and encourage them to keep up the good work. We are also very excited to announce that our houses will be organizing our first ever fall festival on October 13th from 5pm to 8pm at Iuka Middle School. Come out and enjoy some fall fun that will include games, auctions, and food for all! We are still collecting clean,  plastic bottle caps for House Wars until the end of the month.

IMS is continuing to encourage student attendance as MDE has named September “Attendance Awareness” month to help combat chronic absenteeism in school. A student’s perfect attendance each week is rewarded by earning 1 house point. Every morning, students also engage in games and activities called Chieftain Challenges as soon as the bell rings to encourage students to be present. Students earn house points and free snacks for winning. Focus on attendance will continue throughout the year at IMS because we know there is a direct correlation between student attendance and student achievement.
