In their first entry in the Mississippi Press Association Better Newspaper Contest since 2012, the Tishomingo County News earned five awards in the annual contest that recognizes excellence in journalism.
“We are so proud of all winners in the contest,” said MPA President Stephanie Patton, editor and publisher of The Leland Progress. “Recognition of their hard work honors the impact they make in the communities they serve.”
The News won awards for the work of two of its columnists, Bo Murphy and Nate Clark. Also recognized was a retrospective news package on the 2021 Iuka tornado, a spot news photo and a news story about an historic court case involving hunting dogs.
The oldest business in the county, the News, fondly known as The Vidette, covers Tishomingo County and nearby areas, and has readers from more than 25 states. In 2022, new owners and management revamped the weekly, started an online version, podcasts, special sections, activated social media to provide readers with all encompassing news coverage of the county.

Thirty-nine newsrooms entered over 1,500 entries into 35 categories during this year’s contest. It was judged this spring by volunteers from the Arkansas Press Association.
Now in its 157th year, the Mississippi Press Association is the trade group representing state newspapers and digital media.
