Verlon Strickland Calvery passed away peacefully on February 7, 2023, at the Tishomingo County Living Center. She recently celebrated her 99th birthday. Visitation will be Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Ludlam Funeral Home, Iuka, MS beginning at 10:00 a.m. until noon. Following visitation Funeral services will be held in Ludlam Funeral Home Chapel beginning at noon. Ms. Calvery will be buried next to her husband Billy Harold Calvery and her parents Lewis and Mattie Bell Strickland at New Lebanon Church Cemetery, Tishomingo, MS. Mrs. Calvery was a graduate of Holcut High School and attended Northeast Mississippi Community College. She was a member of the Ross Road Church of Christ in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a school teacher at Roland Mills, Center Point and Oak Ridge schools. She left education and went to work at Lowenstein’s in Memphis. She later became the chief buyer of cosmetics and jewelry for Belks department stores before retiring after 40 years of service. She enjoyed Fox News and talking about politics. Verlon was unique in the fact that she never had a driver’s license but traveled extensively buying merchandise for Belk’s. Helping others and herself to always look their best was important to her. She relished going to the beauty shop each week to have her hair done and this tradition carried on until her passing.
Verlon will be missed by her brothers, sisters, and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Billy Harold Calvery, brothers Hoyt Strickland (Vowery), Travis Strickland (Katie), Ellis Ray Strickland (Bonnie Sue), Earl Strickland, Dearl Strickland, and sister Nelda Cook.
She is survived by her brothers Tommy Strickland, Bobby Strickland and sisters Barbara Berryman and Johnnie Bobo. Pallbearers will be her nephews. The service will be officiated by Brother Scott Weber and Bro. Roger Wood. Ludlam Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Verlon Strickland Calvery.
