Recent Tishomingo County graduate Spence Coffman made history this week when Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres drafted him. He’s the first Tishomingo County High School player to be drafted by an MLB team.
According to mom Michelle Coffman, it’s all been a whirlwind since the announcement that he was drafted in the 19th round by the Padres. Spence flies out Sunday to Phoenix, and the family has been busy with contracts and agents, she said, promising details later in the week.
With a standout performance as a pitcher, shortstop, and hitter all spring, Coffman ended his senior season with a stack of team awards like Most Valuable Player and led in the division, earning Division 1-4A Defensive Player of the Year, and first-team All-Division honors. He signed with Southeastern Louisiana University to play college ball, but the Coffmans have been aware of three professional teams scouting him. He is one of two high school players from Mississippi who were drafted.
Spence is the son of Rodney and Michelle Coffman.
