Rita Ables Johnson Nixon, 83, of Iuka, Mississippi, died on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at her residence. Rita was born on August 26, 1939, to Alphus V. and Lera M. Ables in Tishomingo County, MS. She graduated from high school in 1958 with honors and was a member of the band and the basketball team. Then, she went on to graduate from Northeast Mississippi Community College with an associate degree in nursing, which she used for over 40 years in her profession as an R.N. Throughout her career, Rita was employed with various hospitals in many different supervisory roles. In the sixties, she was the Tishomingo County Home Health Nurse. In 2001, she retired from Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. After retiring, Rita and her husband, Bill Nixon, moved to Smithville, TN, where they lived until the time of Bill’s passing. Rita then moved back to Booneville to be closer to her family, which she loved dearly.

Rita was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed attending church whenever she was able. In her free time, she loved to read and travel. Her favorite authors included John Grisham and John Steinbeck.

Rita is survived by her daughter, Lisa Wallis (Tim); her grandchildren, Alisha Latham (David), Richard Way, and Marie Jones; her great-grandchildren, Brooke Latham, Roshalynn Holley, Sean Holley, Matthew Jones, Aaron Jones, and Christian Jones; her sisters, Elizabeth Reynolds and Martha Puckett (Helton); and a host of other friends and family members. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bill Nixon and Boyd Johnson; her son, Bryan Johnson; her parents, A.V. and Lera Mae Ables; and her siblings, Richard Hayden Ables, Alma Faye Ables, and two infant brothers.

Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka, MS, is entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation was from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka. Funeral services followed at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka. Interment was in Joel Cemetery.
