A local group of Christians has truly given “new life” to an old church and will be having their annual camp meeting soon. They are reaching out to the community to spread the good news, and overcome some ghosts.
Pastors Darrell and Martha Stafford lead the non-denominational church located at 1360 Constitution Drive in Iuka and also publish a Christian newspaper. The Staffords have been in Iuka for many years; their former church was located across from Country Squire on Old Highway 72.
When the former congregation sold the church on Constitution Drive, it was the perfect opportunity for the New Life congregation to expand. Its 100 or so members have been working for the past three years to renovate the brick church and its adjoining buildings. There’s no connection to the former pastor or congregation.
Impacted like all churches by Covid, they are in rebuilding mode, and members describe a sweet relationship in the body of Christ worshipping together there.
“Pastors Darrell and Martha are the nicest, most sincere people you’ve ever met, and my whole family goes there. We’ve been there several years now, and we love it,” said Mechelle Pounders, of Tishomingo. Her husband Roger and other men share in leading worship and Wednesday evening services, she said. “My sister and her husband, my parents, we all attend there now.”
Each year in October since moving to the new location New Life hosts an old fashion Camp Meeting with ministers coming from several states away to fellowship and worship together.
The meeting will be from October 19th through the 23rd. There will be praise and worship, special singing and preaching. The first service will be Wednesday evening at 7 pm and there will be two services daily from Thursday through Sunday at 11 am and 7 pm. There will be a meal served after each service in their newly renovated fellowship hall and dining area.
There is no connection to the previous congregation.
“From the beginning, New Life Church has been about bringing people together and helping the community,” said Pastor Darrell. “Iuka is our home and we want to do our best to be a light in the darkness, a shining city set on a hill.”
Everyone is welcome at New Life Church and, the sign says, “come as you are!”
“I tell folks that visit you are only a stranger once at New Life Church,” said Pastor Martha.
