Friends and family of Tishomingo’s Justin Maxwell, 29, have organized a benefit concert and dinner event to help Justin and his wife, Selena, pay expenses while he undergoes extensive cancer treatment in Houston beginning this week.
The benefit will be August 6th at the county fairgrounds beginning at 2 p.m.
There will be a silent auction, a live auction, hamburger and fish plates and live music from 4-8 p.m. with Sam Evans and the River Rats.
The couple and their 9-month old baby headed to Houston in mid July where Justin is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer that has spread to his lungs.
“After chemo takes him down,” described family friend Kathy Helton, “they will do stem cell treatment.”
This is the fourth bout with cancer Justin has dealt with since he was 21, said Helton. The other cancer was in his abdomen and was brought under control with previous treatments, but now it’s in his lungs, she said.
They have to stay there on or near the campus for three months, and he has to have a full-time caretaker.
“Maxwell has not been able to work for a few months, and who knows when he will be able to work again after this round of treatment,” said Helton. “We are just trying to help them out during the hardest time they have ever gone through.”
In addition to the benefit, there are items like a taxidermy mount and a pistol being raffled, and there’s a GoFund Me page people can contribute to. Donors can also donate at any First American National Bank location, said Helton.
