Business – Student Panel Discussion at Belmont High School

Panel Members Were from Businesses Right Here in Tishomingo County

Sponsored by Career Coach Amanda Seals and Belmont High School, the business-student panel discussion was designed to inform 11th and 12th graders about career opportunities in the area.   Approximately 150 students attended the panel discussion.

Panel members included:

  • Nadara Cole, Vice President, Workforce Training & Economic Development, Northeast Mississippi Community College;
  • Derric Morrison, Team Member Engagement Specialist, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi;
  • Jason Southward, Human Resource Manager, G & G Steel;
  • Cameron Graham, Production Manager, G & G Steel;
  • Matt Rider, Human Resource Manager, Tempur Sealy;
  • David Parr, Production Supervisor, Tempur Sealy;
  • Jessie Perriman, Marketing/Digital Media Officer, First American National Bank;
  • Kaila Timbs, Assistant Branch Manager, Community Spirit Bank;
  • Jamie Pruitt, Director of Support Services, North Mississippi Medical Center.

The number one issue with business and industry today is the lack of qualified job applicants.

Panel participants stressed that there may not have been many living wage jobs in the area 30 years ago, but that is not the case now.   The area now has more careers than people to fill those careers.

It is important to know what you want to do and to find a career that you enjoy.   Skills beyond high school are often required but even entry level jobs have advancement potential for persons with a good attitude and willingness to learn.   College is no longer the only route to a high paying and satisfying career.

Do a good job wherever you are and opportunities will follow.  Tips for success in career advancement include learn to think and solve problems, pass drug and alcohol tests, show up every workday on time, communicate effectively, work as a team member, and have a positive attitude.   Employers usually check social media used by applicants so be careful what you post online.   Employers notice resumes that include volunteer and civic work.

Many businesses and industries offer job shadowing, internships, and apprenticeships to students and most pay team members for training at the local community college.
