On November 10, 2022, President Brenda Whitfield called the meeting to order at 2:00, at the Iuka Library. Beverly Estes was the hostess and Fredda McCune presented the program. Members stood for the Pledge of Allegiance, and Beverly read from her devotional book “Seeing God in America” and talked about why the Pilgrims came to America in 1620 and how their faith led them from England to America. But the Pilgrims didn’t mainly come because of their faith they also attempted to apply it to their lives - personal, family, church, city government, and their economic productivity. This should help us to understand the significance of why we should remember and honor the journey of faith that brought them to America. She mentioned the scripture passage Revelation 3:3 She then offered the invocation.
Members present were Brenda Whitfield, Beverly Estes, Fredda McCune, Joy Kitchens, Jo Russell, Brenda Irwin, Ruth Ellen Cox, Pat Nichols, and Vicki Yates. Members who were absent for various reasons were missed. October meeting’s minutes were read and unanimously approved. Members enjoyed light refreshments.
Fredda gave a very informative and interesting program about Civic Engagement and Outreach on Community Service Program which highlights and encourages citizenship; crime prevention, safety and disaster preparedness; the needy, hungry, and homeless; and our military personnel and veterans.
Fredda reminded us in case of a disaster it is best to have a disaster supply kit readily available. She went over all the critical things you should have in your disaster kit. General items would be two weeks’ supply of medicine, batteries, a flashlight, NOAA weather radio, cell phone chargers, and also cash because banks and ATMs may not be available after a storm. Make a list of important phone numbers. Clothing such as rain gear, jackets, sturdy shoes or boots, and work gloves. Special needs items for infants, small children, and elderly family members with disabilities. First Aid kit filled with all the necessary items. Nonperishable food, non-electric can opener, water at least a gallon per person per day, paper plates, napkins, cups, and utensils. Important documents such as insurance cards, medical records, banking and credit card information, and all other legal documents such as birth, marriage, and social security card. Set of car and house keys. Copy of will. Information on meds, the name of the drug and dosage. All these items should be in a waterproof container. Keep vehicle tanks filled with gasoline. If you have any pets, have food and water to last at least 7 days, proper identification and medical records, carrier or cage, leash and water and food bowls as well as any medication. Decide if it is safe to evacuate or shelter in place. Call 911 and explain the situation and provide first aid for any injured people. Take photos of damage if it is safe. In case of a disaster have a designated place where you will meet a family member, so you’ll be able to reconnect with them.
Fredda also presented the financial report. Brenda distributed donation checks to members who will in turn distribute to local entities. During our meeting our pecans arrived, please get with any club member and place your order of halves or pieces, $12 a bag. Other business discussed we were not able to do a Veteran’s Day party due to Covid. Christmas Under the Stars is scheduled for next month and Adopt an Angel from Angel Tree. Continue to schedule and report on the Storytime Literacy Project. Announcements included the date of our next meeting will also be our Christmas social luncheon at Lil’ Smokies on December 8, 2022, at 1:00. Hostess will be Brenda Irwin and Program Chairman will be Jo Russell on Health & Wellness. Our action plan is to bring lingerie items for SAFE. Brenda Whitfield won the door prize this month. There was no further business and the meeting adjourned on motion, second and unanimously approved. The entire 20th Century Club wishes all the community to have a very Happy, Safe, and Blessed Thanksgiving.
