Compassion earned a smile from a snake

Posted

We were sitting there watching my wife’s favorite TV show, “Ice Road Truckers” when i looked out the window and saw something black moving across the driveway.
It was big and long and when I got to the door with my shotgun, it was almost gone. I eased around the yard and there he was, a big, and I mean BIG king snake.
My reaction to any snake has always been to shoot it, but something stopped me. This was a king snake, a snake that had almost, or close to the same feelings I have about other snakes.
I let him go.
I’ve not seen many snakes in the last two years, (I’m not complaining), so maybe this fellow was the reason. I killed one a long time ago while it was swallowing a copperhead. I said to myself, “well, you got two with one shot.” If I had thought and waited just a few minutes, I might have realized what it was doing for me. I was killing a snake, but I didn’t wait, didn’t think, just reacted like always. I promised myself I would never kill another king snake.
As it crawled away, it stopped and raised it’s head, and I think it smiled at me.
