Raging Fires Sweep Through County

In Response, Board of Supervisors Issue Burn Ban

The Tishomingo County Board of Supervisors has issued a Burn Ban for the county following several destructive fires recently. Volunteer fire departments and city departments have worked hours trying to extinish the flames that are feeding on the dry conditions that exist in the area.

A fire in the Old Ham Community Sunday brought several fire departments, including Cherokee, to the site. As you can see in these photos the fire which began around 10:30 spread quickly, with Old Ham Baptist Church and the Woodruff and Ham’s homes in its path. Apparently a resident had tried to burn off a parcel of land when the fire got out. It consumed the large field next to the railroad track and whet up the hill towards the Reid Ham home. According to Melynda Woodruff, their home was saved due to the fact that her husband had just recently bush hoged around the house and barn. Another fire in the Carter’s Brand area consumed over 150 acres of land recently.
