New additions have been incorporated into Iuka’s World-Famous Mineral Springs Park Veterans Memorial for Veteran Day 2023 through partnerships with the City of Iuka, the Boy Scouts Iuka Troop 26, Iuka Rotary Club, the National Garden Club, Inc., the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, and Master Gardeners.

Eagle Scout Isaiah Robertson, a graduate of TCHS and a current undergraduate student at Boston University, stated, “I wanted this project to be one that would have a significant impact on my community, and I couldn’t think of a better way to do so than honoring our Armed Forces and their families who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. It is a true honor to see them permanently placed at the Veterans Memorial.” Isaiah developed the idea of securing permission, placement, layout, landscaping (coming as weather permits), and funds for the Blue and Gold Star Memorials, and then decided he felt it would be great to have a visual for visitors to understand the proper flag folds and the significance of each individual fold.

A Blue Star Memorial was added as a tribute to the Armed Forces that have defended the United States of America, sponsored by the Iuka Rotary Club in cooperation with the City of Iuka, the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

A Gold Star Memorial was added as a tribute to Gold Star Families whose loved ones paid the ultimate price defending the United States of America, sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America Iuka Troop 26 in cooperation with the City of Iuka, the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Signs depicting each of the 13 folds of the American Flag have also been added, providing a visual representation of each proper fold of the American Flag and the meaning behind each individual fold.

“These additions to the Veterans Memorial are a true testament to our community’s appreciation for each person who has served so we may live free. We owe each Veteran a level of gratitude that could never be repaid. But we hope the new memorials and flag folding representations will serve as a reminder of those who have provided for our freedom and will educate future generations who visit the Veterans Memorial at Iuka’s Mineral Springs Park.”
