A tragic automobile accident in Iuka Thursday evening was fatal to Jason “Geezer” McGee, athletic trainer for Sheffield, Alabama High School.
Mr. McGee, had just left the TCHS gym, where the Braves and the Alabama basketball teams met for a night of high school competition.
According to Tishomingo County Coroner Mack Wilemon, the two-vehicle accident happened at the intersection of Mt. Gilead Road and U.S. 72. Apparently, Mr. McGee, who was alone in his 2012 Ford Focus, had left the TC gym by the back entrance of the school. It is not known why he took this route, (possibly GPS was being used) but he turned right on Mt. Gilead across from the Country Squire Restaurant and was attempting to enter the eastbound lane of 72 when he was hit on the passenger side of his car by an east-bound 18-wheeler. The 911 call came in at 9:07 and Mr. McGee died at the Iuka Hospital a short time later.
The driver of the TMC18-wheeler out of Iowa, was from Raleigh, NC, and was not injured in the wreck.
Jason “Geezer” McGee, 46, was from Florence. He was a much-loved school official who will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his smile that lit up the entire room, and his devotion to his role as the athletic trainer for Lauderdale County High School, Brooks High School, Rogers High School, and, for the last 16 years, Sheffield High School. He loved all of his players, who knew him as “Geezer”, no matter where they were from, and his players adored him. Jason was a light to all who knew him. He was a member of Atlas Church of Christ and was survived by his father, one sister, his nieces, and a host of friends.
