IUKA, Miss. – This past Tuesday, Rooster Tail Gallery and Studio hosted a highly anticipated watercolor workshop with renowned artist, Wyatt Waters, known for his masterful plein air techniques and captivating storytelling. Originally scheduled for September, the workshop was postponed due to severe weather but was successfully rescheduled this week. Despite the usual cold and rainy Spring Break weather, gallery owner Terrie Whitehurst couldn’t have asked for a more perfect setting for the outdoor workshop: bright blue skies, springtime temperatures, and warm sunshine illuminated the day.
Waters, a gifted teacher and artist, is known for his ability to demystify the painting process, breaking down each brushstroke and color choice with clear, concise explanations. His students, both seasoned and novice, were captivated by his approach, gathering around him in awe as he painted live on-site. The magic of the session was not just in his ability to paint, but in his ability to make the process accessible and engaging for all who attended. His love for the medium and his deep understanding of light and color were evident as he demonstrated the flow and movement of the watercolor paints.
The energy of the workshop spilled onto the streets of Iuka, drawing the attention of passersby who stopped to watch the artists at work. As they strolled by, curious shoppers paused to admire the painted scenes of the town.
After a delicious lunch break, the artists set out on their own, each finding a quiet corner of downtown Iuka to paint. Waters spent the afternoon working one-on-one with each participant, offering tailored advice and insight to help them elevate their watercolor technique. The atmosphere of Iuka’s charming streets, coupled with the guidance from such an accomplished artist, created an environment of growth and inspiration.
While the workshop was an unforgettable experience for the 13 artists involved, Rooster Tail Gallery and Studio has more workshops planned throughout the year.
