The City of Iuka held a Special Run-off Election to fill the Alderman seat vacated after Kenny Carson won the Mayoral election.
The run-off was between Casey Johnson and Linda Murrah-Byrd.
It was another low voter turnout, with only 219 paper ballots and 22 absentee ballots cast. Three of the 22 ballots were rejected.
Absentee ballots were being counted when an issue was brought to the attention of Tishomingo County Circuit Clerk, Rebecca Oaks.
The ballots were printed originally with Murrah-Byrd listed above Johnson alphabetically using Byrd.
The State alerted the Circuit Clerk’s office who has assisted the city in the voter election. The State pointed out that the names were listed incorrectly alphabetically. Johnson’s name should appear before Murrah-Byrd’s
The incorrect ballots had to be damaged and correct ballots marked as to how the absentee ballot was cast.
It was a close race and could have gone either way.
There is a 5-day waiting period after the election for any mail in ballots to be received, then the results will be made official.
The unofficial totals, Casey Johnson with 130 votes and Linda Murrah-Byrd with 108 votes.
