20th Century Club discusses domestic violence

On February 9th, 2023 the 20th Century Club held their meeting at the Iuka Library. President Brenda Whitfield called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.
Vicki had the program and Attorney Nathaniel Clark, Iuka City and County Prosecutor presented the program on domestic violence. Domestic violence is prevalent in every community and affects all people regardless of age, social economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion or nationality. One in three are women, and one in four are men that are abused. One of the most dangerous calls for a police officer is responding to a domestic violence call.
Millions of children are exposed to domestic violence and live in fear within their own homes. These incidents have long-lasting negative effects on children’s emotional well-being and social and academic functioning. The devastating consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime.
There is a pattern of behavior and if you suspect a loved one or friend is experiencing abuse, let them know you are there for them and they can seek help by calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or go to the MS Attorney General’s website.
Fredda McCune was hostess and all members stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. She read a Valentine’s poem, “When Did I Start to Love You” it was such a beautiful tribute to the love of your life. She also gave the invocation. Her table was beautifully decorated for Valentine’s and lots of wonderful refreshments enjoyed by all.
Members present were Brenda Whitfield, Fredda McCune, Pat Nichols, Brenda Irwin, Beverly Estes, Joy Kitchens, Jo Russell, Catherine Thomas, Vicki Yates, and a visitor Vonnie Pounders. Members out due to illness or various reasons were missed.
Correspondence was presented by Joy, January meeting minutes read by Vicki and the financial report was presented by Fredda. Money collected for pecan sales. Catherine reported on our Literacy Project bringing Story-time to Iuka children. Turn on the Tap project is still ongoing. All donations have been distributed to the schools and Food Pantry.
Announcements included a Valentine’s party hosted for the Tishomingo Center for Disabled Adults on Monday the 13th of February at 12:30pm. Deadline for history report is March 1 and Women’s History Celebration is March 8.
Date of our next meeting will be on March 9, 2023, Hostess will be Vicki Yates and Program Chairman will be Ruth Ellen Cox on the Arts. Our action plan will be to fill an Easter basket for the children of the food pantry with either candy, art supplies, or anything a child will like. There was no further business. Joy Kitchens won door prize and meeting adjourned.
